Nirmal Purja Dies in Broad Peak Avalanche: His Verified Climbing Records

Nirmal "Nimsdai" Purja died after an avalanche struck his expedition on Pakistan's Broad Peak, his company Elite Exped confirmed on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The confirmation ended uncertainty about the Nepal-born mountaineer and former British soldier, but it did not make every report about the wider 10-person expedition equally settled.

Associated Press reporting based on the Alpine Club of Pakistan and regional authorities provides the clearest time-stamped rescue record. The team lost contact with base camp on Thursday, July 30. By early Saturday, three bodies had been recovered, a fourth had been located and rescuers backed by military helicopters were searching for at least six people. Elite Exped's later statement confirmed Purja's death. Those updates belong in chronological order because recovery, identification and company notification do not necessarily happen at the same time on an 8,000-meter mountain.

Broad Peak rises to 8,047 meters in the Karakoram and is the world's 12th-highest mountain. Elite Exped describes a normal commercial itinerary as 46 days, including acclimatization, rest and a broad summit window. That planning margin explains the scale of the environment better than the company's description of Broad Peak as one of the relatively easier 8,000ers: avalanche exposure, rapidly changing weather and the limits of helicopter access remain decisive.

Purja's record book is larger than the famous 189-day project

Purja became globally recognizable through Project Possible, his 2019 campaign to climb all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters in 189 days. The achievement was documented in Netflix's 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible. AP notes that the speed record from that campaign was surpassed in 2023, so describing it as the current record would now be wrong.

His later verified record is less familiar and more durable. Guinness World Records says Purja completed true-summit ascents of all 14 eight-thousanders without supplementary oxygen in two years and 150 days, from Kangchenjunga on May 7, 2022, to Shisha Pangma on October 4, 2024. Guinness also records 49 true-summit ascents of 8,000-meter mountains through September 25, 2025, including 25 without supplementary oxygen.

Those dates matter because mountaineering record claims change as climbers add ascents and as summit evidence is reviewed. Company biographies and same-day tributes may contain newer totals, but the Guinness pages state both the measured achievement and the verification cutoff. The defensible summary is therefore specific: 49 verified true-summit ascents through September 25, 2025, not a timeless career total.

Purja also belonged to the 10-member all-Nepalese team that made the first winter ascent of K2 in January 2021. His own company credits that ascent to collective preparation and a synchronized final approach to the summit, a reminder that even the career attached to one famous name depended on guides, rope teams, logistics and rescue capacity.

Broad Peak shows where elite experience stops controlling the outcome

Elite Exped's Broad Peak material emphasizes self-sufficiency, backup oxygen, trained guides and rescue capability. The avalanche is a severe counterexample to the idea that preparation eliminates mountain risk. At extreme altitude, deteriorating weather can ground aircraft, snow can erase access and a rescue team can face the same hazards as the people it is trying to reach.
